21 September 2008 - Jim Day Memorial Pole Vault Competition - Norman Park

The Jim Day Memorial Pole Vault competitions once again enjoyed fabulous conditions for late September.  The enthusiastic and supportive crowd and brilliant sunshine brought out the very best in the competitors.

The younger vaulters, in particular, took full advantage of the day and their results once again lifted several athletes further up the Power of 10 rankings.

The two competitions produced eleven personal bests and three seasons' bests. Notable performances came from Under 20 vaulter Matt Deveraux (Bedford & County AC) who twice improved on his personal best to finish on 4.70m. Naomi Lee, a young Under 13 vaulter from Lewes AC also twice improved her lifetime best with 2.42m.

Other athletes to achieve lifetime best were:

Teresa Eades (W50) 2.32m.

Emilie Blackwell (Under 15) 2.42m

Claudia Noakes (Under 15) 2.82m

Anna Huggins (Under 15) 2.82m

Peter Henworth (Under 17) 3.92m

Mark Longhurst (Under 17) 3.52m

Rosa Williams (Under 17) 3.32m

The event once again proved that conducive conditions and the right atmosphere will bring out the very best in everyone.

Well done to all the athletes and a big thank you to the officials and helpers for their support.

We look forward to more of the same next year.

20 August 2008 - Sydney Wooderson Memorial Meeting at Sutcliffe Park

Race report by Dave Reader

Warburton Wins Inaugural Wooderson Race

Loughborough based athlete Chris Warburton won the inaugural Sydney Wooderson Memorial Race last night, snatching victory in a tight finish.

The race made its debut as part of the BMC Regional Race Series held at Sutcliffe Park in South East London, and despite wet conditions the event didn’t fail to entertain. In a quality field, Warburton came out tops to win in 1:49.87 to take home the first prize of £150.

At the bell, the field was tightly packed and this didn’t change until the finish. Down the home straight, anyone could have won the race but it was Chris Warburton who showed a better finish to edge out Damien Moss into second, with James Thie coming third.

Wet conditions hampered the effort to break Wooderson’s original 800m world record of 1:48.4, set in 1938, so the bonus went unclaimed.

Local under 23 athlete and Cambridge Harrier Joe Durrant was just edged out of the top three places and prize money, coming home fourth in 1:50.85.

The race was the idea of Blackheath & Bromley Harriers – the club to which Wooderson belonged and the race was hosted by the British Milers’ Club. The race served as a highlight for the evening which saw over 150 athletes racing over 800m and 1500m.

David Reader, BMC Secretary added, "It was great to see the race make its debut. The field rose to the challenge and they were only a fraction outside the Wooderson time. With better conditions, I’m sure they would have gone below 1:48.4.”

It is hoped the race will be annual feature.
