Photos and report from Tom Philips

Kent Masters, under 13’s and Combined Events Championships 2006

Erith can be a cold and windy place in September, but not this time. The warm, still conditions made for good performances by most of the B&B athletes who were there. But there’s the point – where were the rest? There were notably small fields in many Masters events, with almost certain medals for Blackheath athletes simply going begging. So why were several of our Masters track athletes running in the Will Bolton Relays instead? We had no M40 athletes on show at all. Why not?

Our throwers were the stars of the weekend, with Beatrice Simpson, Barbara Terry and Colin Brand all posting championship best performances. All of them agree, though, that the two golds and one silver achieved in the under 13 girls throws by Mollie Norris were a highlight of a busy weekend. Good to report that the only person to beat Mollie was Kelly Davey, who pipped her for the under 13 girls shot title.

While Tom Phillips retained his two M50 sprints titles in fast times and by big margins, track performance of the weekend was from Anton Daly. His fine win in the under 13 boys 200m, following a faster and very impressive win in his heat won nods of approval from all who saw him run. Anton cruised to a win in the 100m too. Aaron Lloyd was fortunate to make the under 13 boys 75m hurdles final after stumbling in the heats, but ran a fine second place, in good style.

Jim Day has a habit of making many of the M70 events his own. His five wins at pole vault, long and high jump, 100m and hurdles added medals to his already huge collection. The 2.40m vault was one of Jim’s best performances this year, too.

Good also to see silver medals for Clem Leon at shot and 100m, and a good win in the long jump. Gordon Hickey won the M70 shot and was runner up to Colin Brand in the other throws.

Official results will emerge in the fullness of time (perhaps), and those below are unofficial, and probably incomplete, so apologies to those who have been missed.
