FESTIVAL OF RACE WALKING, HILLINGDON
SUNDAY 1ST OCTOBER 2017
Shaun Lightman’s young athletes were in action again
this weekend at the annual Festival of Race Walking and with female
representation in each young age group category, the girls were all prepared
for challenging races.
England race walker and English Schools international,
Isabelle Bridge faced tough opposition from Irish walkers in the Under 17
girls race over 5km. A new Personal Best on the road gave her a well
deserved silver medal.
Abigail Smith walked for the first time as an Under 15
athlete over a longer distance of 3km, against a number of rivals who had
also moved up an age category and in particular, the 2017 Under 15 English
Schools Champion from Aldershot & Farnham AC. After working her way through
to second place by the end of 2km, Abigail closed down the 50m gap between
her and first place and went on to win the race in a new Personal Best time
of 17.38, a comfortable six seconds ahead of the runner up.
Blackheath and Bromley’s youngest athlete was Katie
Brash who, tasked with walking 2km for the first time competitively, kept a
steady pace and a cool head, successfully securing her first race walking
gold medal for her time of 13:37.

BLACKHEATH & BROMLEY RACEWALKING GIRLS HELP ENGLAND
WIN BACK THE NIHILL SHIELD
Isabelle Bridge and Abigail Smith travelled to
Tullamore, southern Ireland as part of the England team selected to walk
against Ireland in the annual Paul Nihill Shield match for up and coming
young racewalkers.
In a starting field of 13 walkers, 10 of which were
unknown Irish girls, Abigail employed sound race tactics to secure a win in
the Under 14 girls 2km race, 3 seconds ahead of the runner up and gaining a
new Personal Best of 11:05 over that distance on the track.
With
strict judging already evident and a number of walkers disqualified,
Isabelle stepped up to represent England in the Under 17 girls 3km race,
walking very close to her Personal Best over this distance on the track. She
secured 3rd place overall and was the first English girl home in a time of
16:28.
England won the match overall scoring 44 points to
Ireland’s 41 points.
Isabelle will yet again be walking at an International
level when she represents English Schools at the annual Schools
International Athletic Board Track and Field event against Wales, Scotland
and Ireland in Dublin this weekend.

29 May 2017
Following two successful National races in April, both Isabelle Bridge
and Abigail Smith have been selected to represent England in the annual
Nihill Shield match against Ireland in Tullamore, near Dublin on Sunday 9
July 2017. This is the second time Isabelle has gained an international vest
and the first for Abigail. A tremendous achievement and honour for both of
them, a reward and reflection of their hard work and commitment to their
training.
SUCCESS FOR BLACKHEATH & BROMLEY HARRIERS GIRLS AT
THE RACE WALKING ASSOCIATION YOUNG AGE GROUP NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS,
COVENTRY ON SATURDAY 29TH APRIL 2017
Having both been chosen to represent the Southern Area
of the Race Walking Association at Lee Valley the previous weekend in an
Inter-Area match against the Midlands and the North and helping the Southern
Area to secure a win overall by coming second in their respective races,
training partners Isabelle Bridge and Abigail Smith travelled to Coventry
for their second National competition in a week.
A closely fought battle and a nail biting finish saw
Abigail Smith (coached by former Olympian Shaun Lightman) win the Under 13
girls 2km walk by 3 seconds in a new Personal Best time over that distance
of 11 mins 32 secs. She received the Uxbridge Cup from Ann Perry, President
of the Race Walking Association.
Also representing the Club and coached by Shaun
Lightman was our Breakthrough Athlete of 2016, Isabelle Bridge, who came a
secure 3rd in the Under 17 girls 5 km walk, beating her rival Alice Bellando
by 26 seconds in a new Personal Best time for this 5 km course of 29 mins 3
seconds. A fantastic achievement as Isabelle has only recently moved up to
the 5km distance.
