Seven
Blackheath & Bromley runners and their supporters, made their way to Berlin
to run the 50th celebration of the iconic Berlin marathon on 29 September
2024.
All agreed it was an amazing event and weekend,
despite delays, flight and rail cancellations causing frustrations. Steve
Hough even ended up in Vienna on the way to Berlin!
Berlin is truly a huge race, with the 2024 event
seeing a world record 54,000 completing the course! If you make allowances
for the distinct lack of good toilets at the start, some mismanagement of
the access to the start pens and a few small pinch points early on the
course, Berlin has true PB potential. This was proved with Douglas Varney,
Matt Bullen, Steve Hough and Carole Coulon all smashing their PBs!
Performance
of the day has to be Carole who broke her own BBHAC club record in a very
impressive time of 2.53.18.
Fastest for the Club, with his second fastest ever
marathon time was Luca Ercolani with 2.47.12, closely followed by Steve H in
2.48.31. Douglas (seen here from the official website finishing with Steve
H) had started 2 mins earlier than Steve H, getting his PB in 2.51.24. That
is a very impressive set of MV50 results, all well under 3 hours!
Trang Nguyen, despite some illness concerns, ran a
brilliant 3.11.39 (to hopefully qualify with Carole for the London Marathon
Championship!) Matt took 5 minutes off his PB in 3.19.48! Bringing up the
rear (in age as well as time!) was Steve Pairman in 3.33.14 which is still a
good enough time to enter the Good For Age ballot for London 2025.
A massive thanks to our long suffering (but
enthusiastic!) partners and a young Varney, who were there to cheer us all
on. A great weekend running a Marathon Major in a lively City!
