English Schools Track and Field Championships 2019
This weekend saw 45 Blackheath and Bromley HAC
athletes competing for various counties at the 89th edition of the English
Schools Track and Field Championships, in Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.
The stadium, home to British Athletics, is soon to be rebuilt and upgraded
in time for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. According to England Athletics,
English Schools is the “4th largest athletics event in the world”, therefore
this is a very prestigious event for young athletes to compete in. Across
the weekend Blackheath and Bromley athletes won four golds, five silvers,
two bronzes and four international vests.
In the junior boy’s pole vault, Ben Platt secured an
equal PB of 3.50m and a silver medal for Kent in his debut English Schools,
after only recently taking up the event. County teammate, Adam Islam Medeaux,
also competing in his first English Schools, automatically qualified in his
heat for the 300m final where he came a strong 6th.
Amerisa Sibley had a busy weekend running three 800s
over the two days. She securely made both the semis and the final where she
finished an impressive 5th with an outdoor PB of 2:14.46. Also in the junior
girls 800m, Imogen Hadley put in a solid performance for Surrey. Hannah
Clark and Kate Price competed in a tough junior girls 1500m, representing
Kent and Surrey, respectively. Last year’s English Schools 100m champion,
Tyra Khambai-Annan, executed two great races despite a strong head wind, and
just missed out on the final.
Adding extra excitement to the day, the athletes
placing first and second in the final of any inter event are selected to
compete for England in next week’s schools international (SIAB) in Swansea,
Wales against Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
In the inter boys 1500m Oliver Bright improved on last
year’s 4th place, to finish a massive 2nd securing his first international
track & field vest, to add to his cross-country England vest. Oliver Briars
will also represent England in Wales next week after equaling last year’s
2nd place in the inter boys 400m. In their heats both boys easily qualified
for their finals. Jeriel Quainoo claimed silver in the inter boys 200m
final, after securing a PB of 21.60 in the semi-final. He will be
representing England at the SIAB next weekend.Competing for London at his
first ever English Schools, Reece Nelson placed 5th in the 200m heat,
impressive considering he’s only been competing for one year. Barnaby Corry
kicked off the weekend’s field events in the pole vault, coming 4th, a year
young. Jacob Byfield competed in the triple jump after a tiring Duke of
Edinburgh camp. He still has another year in the age group to improve on
this year’s performance. In the discus Dillon Claydon threw 43.22m, very
close to his PB, to secure 8th; he also has another year in the age group.
Nana Gyedu threw 15.06m to win the inter girls shot by
over a meter, making this her third English schools title in a row and
second England selection! Zsiriah Thomas had a fantastic weekend competing
in the heats, semis, and final of the 100m, finishing 3rd at her first ever
English Schools. In the inter girls 80m hurdles Shakanya Osahon just missed
out on the semi-finals, but she still has another year in the intermediate
age group. In their first year as inters Naomi Toft and Annie Thomas
represented London in the 1500m and 3km, respectively. The club had three
girls in the inter girls 1500m steeplechase, all competing at their first
English Schools. Ellie Osmond and Ailbhe Barnes represented London and Livvy
Berry competed for Kent. All three are fairly new to steeplechase and have
made great improvements this year. Ailbhe Barnes ran superbly securing a PB
of 5:11 and a bronze medal. Ellie and Livvy both had strong runs in this
tough event.
Alex O’Callaghan-Brown stormed to a fantastic gold in
the seniors 400m hurdles. Training partner, Josh Watson, placed 4th in his
110m hurdles final in 14.52. Alex and Josh also helped Surrey to win a
silver in the 4x100 relay. Angus Harrington, also competing for Surrey in
his last English Schools, ran bravely in both the heat and final. His
gutsiness secured him 4th place in the final despite being clipped in the
home straight. Competing in his first English Schools, Kelechi Aguocha came
2nd in the high jump for Kent, jumping 2.04, just 3cm off gold. Also in the
high jump, Harrison Thorne came 5th, jumping 1.92cm for Berkshire, despite
carrying an injury. Pedro Gleadall came 5th in the pole vault with 4.50m,
just short of his best. In the long jump Ben Sutton, the Kent team captain,
jumped 6.80m for 4th and Miles Xavier jumped 6.73 for 6th, 4cm off his best,
in a very close competition. In their first year in the age group, Kyle
Reynolds-Warmington and Jak Mensah executed solid races in the 100m heats,
with Jak running a PB of 11.02 and Kyle clocking a SB time of 10.97. Despite
these great performances the boys just missed out on the final.
In the senior girl's javelin Lauren Farley threw a PB
of 45.66m to take gold which ranks her 2nd in Britain so far this year.
Eloise Locke, Kent captain, put in a solid performance despite missing lots
of training due to illness. Grace Scopes, on the comeback from injury,
competed in the 400 hurdles at her first English Schools and her first race
since May. Jade Oni finished 5th in the triple jump with 11.84m. Hannah
MacAulay came 6th in the discus, throwing 38.47m. In the pole vault Lois
Warden jumped a great personal best of 3.60m to place 4th.
We also had seven 2nd claim athletes competing at the
champs. In the inter boys shot Nathan Bushnell came 4th. Oliver Early came
5th in the 100m hurdles heat for Essex. In the senior boy’s long jump Theo
Adesina took the gold by jumping 7.02m in the last round, his third ever
jump over the 7-meter mark. Sam Illsley competed in the senior boy’s hammer
for Sussex. In the senior girl’s long jump Funminiyi Olajide placed 5th. She
also helped the Essex girls achieve gold in the 4x100m relay. Danielle
Hopkins and Ashleigh West placed 5th and 9th, respectively in the senior
girl’s high jump.
Some high-profile athletes were missing at English
Schools this weekend due to being selected for the European U20s this coming
week. Good luck to Louise Evans in the 400m and 4x400 and Marcia Sey in the
100m hurdles in Boras, Sweden.
Well done to everyone who competed this weekend!!

BBHAC Development Day, Sunday 24th
March 2019
Blackheath and Bromley organised a 'Development Day' on Sunday at Norman
Park to give young athletes (school years 6-11) the chance to try out new
events; and 50 came along to try something new including the pole vault and
javelin. The event was held in brilliant sunshine and was opened by Shannon
Hylton, club member and GB international with a warm and inspirational
welcome for our Young Athletes. The club would like to thank the Parents
Council for leading the organisation of the event and all the coaches, team
managers, officials, club athletes and other volunteers who assisted with
this event. In addition to recruiting some athletes the event also raised
over £200 for club funds through the 2nd hand kit sale and registration
fees.
