OUR PRESIDENT writes - Apart from being injured and ill for most of the last five weeks, I'm enjoying the post of President, probably partly due to the fact that during this period six new Club Records have been set. Mark Steinle did what he threatened to do. He broke through the 2:10 barrier at the London Marathon, his 2:09.17 being the 8th fastest ever by a Briton. It was good to see Mark, Gemma Viney and advisor Alan Storey down at the Clubhouse the following Wednesday to join in the Club's Marathon Supper. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and, after his tale of how not to run a marathon, I've had numerous requests for John Bugler to speak again.

Further afield, in the USA, the oldest record in the book fell. It has long been speculated as to who would break Ted Sampson's 400m record set at the Commonwealth Games in Cardiff in 1958. It fell to one of our newer members. I received a call two winters ago from Guy Spencer of Cambridge Harriers, who coaches long jumper Mark Awanah. He asked if we would be interested in a 45 secs 400m runner. After agonising for a nanosecond I said "Yes" and he gave me details of Tawanda Chiwira. Tawanda turned up at Sutcliffe Park and asked if he could join in their training group. It soon became clear he was quite good. He had just returned from the University of Idaho and was staying with his mother and family in Plumstead. He was part of the Zimbabwe team at the Sydney Olympics. He competed for the Club in the British League and Cup last year, winning the 400m in the final at Bedford. Returning to the States this winter he has been regularly updating us on his performances and promised that, come the outdoor season, the Club Record would go. True to his word he clocked 46.04 in his first race of the season at the Sun Angel Classic meeting at Arizona State University. For good measure he also timed 44.7 for his split in the relay.

Some more recent records have gone too. In the U15s Clare Cooper took over half a second off the 75H record with 11.4 at the Bracknell Open. Victoria Thomas revised her own SP record with 10.62 at the Hercules Wimbledon meeting at Crystal Palace. It took Shaunagh Brown less than a month to start revising the U13G's records. At the Kent Women's League at Tonbridge she was just 4cm adrift on the SP record but then added nearly a metre to the discus record with 21.18.

While Mark was performing with such distinction in the Marathon, Rebecca Taylor was running away from the field in the 11-12 years girls London Boroughs Mini-Marathon. She has obviously hit a rich vein of form, as at the Club's schools meeting at Norman Park she took nearly 4 secs off the U13G Club 800m record set by Gemma Viney in 1994, posting 2:24.3. Congratulations to all these athletes, not forgetting coaches Steve Cluney, Herbie Kuenstlinger and Andy Frankish.

On the basis of these results I would recommend you to get along to some track & field matches in the coming months to witness history being made. It's better than just reading about it. Not only will you see some great individual performances but I'm sure you will also be impressed by that special Blackheath team spirit. (Edt's note - There's more. Remember he doubles as our Pressperson and gets carried away.)

NEXT COURIER: Early July Results, readers' views & other material welcome.

The recent Kent Women's League match was an example of our team spirit. We had 9 non-scorers in the U13 75m and 3 in the 1Km walk.

You might like to extend your support a step further to help the Club in an even more practical way. At some matches points are deducted for failing to provide a full complement of officials, thus negating the points-scoring efforts of the athletes. Just think as you rake the long jump pit that, not only have you got out of doing the gardening, you have been able to support the athletes, score points for the team, get a suntan and get free tea and cake! This is a win-win-win-win-win formula and is highly recommended by your President.

Officials Secretary Mike Davies awaits your call to help on 01689 602038. Best wishes for your athletic activities in the coming months. Don't forget the Club Champs - full details are on your fixture card and in this Courier.

Yours PAT

NOW IT'S HISTORY News of the new one-lap record is a reminder that the Club track championships includes senior competition at 200m for the Wood cup. This takes its name from a distiguished Heathen, C G Wood, who was known as "the fastest farmer in history". In 1886 he became the first Englishman to beat 50 secs for the 440yd event and he was also the first inside 22 secs for 220yds. He may be seen in the Club History (have you got one?) sporting a handsome moustache. Apparently he objected to the new-fangled "crouch start" which he considered an unnatural position for a biped.

BROMLEY AC - WHAT NEXT? Prior to our change of name, the Courier of January 2000 reported the breakdown of talks between ourselves and Bromley AC over possible co-operation, despite the considerable efforts of our officers. Recently there has been some further informal discussion which seems to have progressed on an amicable basis. This culminated in Dave Liston attending a meeting of Bromley AC committee and a return visit by their representatives to meet members of our General Committee was due this week (Mon 29th Apr). Members will of course be advised of the outcome and of any decision for them which arises. It is recognised that this is an area of many considerations and where there are likely to be divergent views within the Club.

CLUB TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2002 The programme will have a new structure this season, all fixtures being at Norman Pk. As follows-

For Wednesday fixtures entry will be on-the-evening, but pre-entry will be required for Mon 24th June & Sat 24th Aug (closing 22nd June & 21st Aug respectively). In addition there will be Open T&F events for Under 11 boys and girls starting at 6.30 on the Wed evening fixtures and also Under 11 running events on Sat 24th Aug. All Under 11 events are by entry on the day.

NATIONAL LOTTERY FUNDING The Club is to get a grant of £4825 from the National Lottery Awards-For-All Programme to develop coaching projects at Norman Park and Ladywell tracks. Development Chairman Dave Liston said "This is a major boost to the development programme and a boost to athletics at the two venues. It allows us to continue to help develop the grass roots of the sport and we look forward to seeing youngsters progressing through to the Club's senior teams. We have worked hard to develop the project and the application and it's now time to put it into action."

LONDON YOUTH GAMES These will be held at the National Sports Centre and attract children from all 33 London Boroughs. The Kentish Times reports that the Queen will be guest of honour on 5th July as part of her Golden Jubilee tour. The visit will also coincide with the re-opening of the restored parts of Crystal Palace park.

LONDON MARATHON CHARITY SUPPORT The main charity selected by the Club this year was South Bromley HospiCare, while individual runners ran in aid of a variety of causes. Thanks to runners and those who supported them. On the larger scene The London Marathon Charitable Trust has, over the years, distributed more than £10M for sport and recreational projects in the London Boroughs, such as saving playing fields from developers.

BLACKHEATH HARRIERS HQ Ltd DEBENTURES Following the Annual General Meeting of BHHQ Ltd held in March it is the intention to repay the outstanding debentures within the next year. We are grateful to those members who have supported the Club through this means. Many in the past have very generously used repayments to make further donations to the Club and this has contributed greatly to our financial stability.

TED PEPPER MEMORIAL RACE Following the changed layout in South Eden Park Road the course has been remeasured. Otherwise it's similar to that used in recent years. The race starts at 11am on Monday 6th May and again incorporates the 10Km Rd Championship for members of SCVAC. Entries are accepted on the day to both the race and the Championship.

BATTERSEA PARK ROAD RACES There is considerable disruption in the park due to building works. Arrangements for the Sri Chinmoy races have not yet been finalised but are likely to begin with a Monday evening race in early June. Veterans AC Runs and Walks will be held over a shorter course than usual (about 7K), with the exception of the Championships on 18th June which will be over a measured 5M course.

CALF PAIN I recently distributed copies of a questionnaire which had been sent to me about runners' experience of the above. Anyone who missed this but is particularly affected can contact the author - Bruce Smart, 3 White Lodge, Exning Rd, Newmarket, Suffolk, CB8 0SS- Tel 01638 603353- email bruce@smart20.fsnet.co.uk.
