*****************************************************************
Our senior men's team were second in the Kent XC Championship fifth in the
Southern and seventh in the National. Individual performances included David
Taylor (1st in Surrey, 2nd in Southern, 6th in National) and Tim Dickinson (1st
in Lancs, 11th in Southern, 20th in National). It's nice to record increased
Club involvment in the Kent leagues, in particular the women gaining the title,
with Jenny Butler the individual series winner.
We lost in the Mobmatch at Ranelagh where lack of numbers
again weighed against us. The Bennett Cup builds to its climax.
Many of our athletes have been involved in the Indoor
season including representation at international level.
A CLUB THANK YOU
Hon. Assistant Treasurer (Membership) Denis Lawrie writes:
It is now near the end of February and I have received more than half the 800 or
so subscriptions for the Club. Over and above the subscriptions we have had a
large number of donations to the various sections of the Club and, through the
pages of the Courier, I would like to say thank you to all the members who have
generously sent in those donations. In particular I would like to thank the many
Life Members who, despite being exempt from Subs, send in donations far in
excess of the subscription levels to help maintain our ongoing success.
Every year we receive several thousand pounds in generous
donations from our members, without which the Club would struggle to maintain
our current level of success and competitiveness. A great big THANK YOU to you
all.
PS. (Can the 354 members who have not yet paid their subs
please pay me soon to avoid any further expense for the Club - further donations
most welcome).
Thanks also to Denis for the job he does for the Club.
NORMAN PARK TRACK
The proposal by Bromley Council to remove the grant was vigorously
opposed by the Club in a campaign co-ordinated by Committee Chairman Derek
Gregory.
We were supported by a number of local residents and
Councillors and by the local "Shopper" newspaper.
The Council at first agreed to 75% restoration then, under
further pressure, to 100%.
We understand that the Council budget for the coming year
has now been finalised on that basis. It appears that the track is one of the
few local facilities to escape unscathed.

Book Review
ATHLETICS ENIGMAS by Alastair Aitken
Publ: The Book Guild 2002. 224 pages. 32 B/W photos.
œ9.99. ISBN 1 85776 603 2
Sports journalist Alastair is a familiar figure, running the London Marathon or
around the meets recording the comments of the famous and the also-rans. His
latest book follows the pattern of his previous two, with insights and
reminiscences derived from his interviews with both such stars as Haile
Gebrselassie and the ordinary club runners. This is extensively backed by the
relevant race statistics.
Those who've been around in athletics will spot many
familiar names and find something of interest on most pages. Twenty or so
Heathens feature in one way or another.
KIWI HONOUR
Alan Stevens has been made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for
services to athletics.
PRESS CUTTINGS
The latest collection of Club cuttings, covering the years 2000 &
2001, has recently been completed. These are mainly reports by Pat Calnan taken
from The Kentish Times, but I'm also grateful to members who send me material
from the national press or from their own local newspapers. Any member
interested in seeing this (or previous) collections should contact Brian Saxton.
