An UPDATE by the HON. SECRETARY
Three meetings on various development issues were held in January as advertised in the last Courier. The first on 17th to discuss the development of our Women's Section was well supported, with almost 20% of the women's membership attending. A full and useful discussion took place, the women putting forward several ideas and views on what was necessary to broaden female membership. These included advertised introduction/ coaching meetings for women in the Borough of Bromley, the need for somebody or bodies to act as a contact and give a welcome to women meeting at the Clubhouse or Norman Park for the first time, and improved communications on matters pertaining to women. At the meeting two women, Karyn O'Mahoney and Kim Viney, volunteered to serve on the committee, and Nicola Viney volunteered to help with our website. The need now is for a volunteer to convene a smaller group to pursue some of the ideas and put them into action.
The second meeting on the 24th, was equally productive for ideas to initiate a Young Athletes Development scheme. Coaching days, come-&-try days and thoughts on how to increase participation in our evening meetings were all discussed. It is likely that some of the evening meetings will be held at Ladywell Arena, where an expanding coaching group is developing under the enthusiasm of Kerryn Seale. Again this all needs someone to push it forward.
The third meeting considered the subject of membership catergories in some detail and came to the conclusion that there was no justification in making any changes at this time.
The final point mentioned in the last Courier, the possibility of a name change, was discussed at the January Committee meeting. After hearing arguments both for against, a vote was taken showing 16 for a change with 2 against. A proposal from the Committee for a name change to "Blackheath Harriers Bromley" will therefore appear on the AGM agenda.
Views, suggestions or volunteers for any of the above matters are most welcome and can be made to the Secretary or other members of the Committee.

OK CHIEFS, but where were the INDIANS?
The Kent Cross-Country Championship resulted in wins for the Senior, Junior and Under-13 teams, Michael Skinner and Colin Norris being the individual winners in the latter two age-groups.
The Southern was another win for the Seniors with Dave Taylor the individual Champion. He followed this up with fourth place in the National, though here the team result was disappointing. There have been a number of other good runs by individuals, notably Dave Heath in the Inter-Counties.
Question: Does anyone with a long memory in the Club remember us ever previously losing all three Mobmatches? Not, at least, in the last 30 years. The reason isn't hard to find. We now have only sixty members able and willing to run a Mobmatch. Of these, three-quarters are vets and the under-35s can be counted on your fingers.
It has been a very active indoor season for all age-groups at all levels. At International level the Club has been represented by Julian Golding, Emeka Udechuku, Akinola Lashore and Mensah Elliott. There have been some excellent performances in the various Championships and one might pick out Fabian Collymore's sprinting in the U17s, Bill Foster's M40 Club record in winning the National Vets 3000m and Gordon Hickey's UK SP record in the SCVAC M65 (pity he missed the National Vets - turned up on the wrong day. Well, what do you expect when you're M65?)

VETERANS TRACK & FIELD
The SCVAC League will revert this year to separate scoring for the Men's and Women's competitions. John (R) Turner will be looking for support, not only from old hands but from those new to our veteran ranks. Anyone with no previous T&F experience should not be put off, as there are always team slots and non-scoring events where experience can be gained.
Dates/ venues are- Mon 17th Apr Ladywell: Mon 22nd May Norman Pk: Fri 16th June Deangate: Mon 24th July Erith. John may be contacted at 01959 540730.
The first Kent AA Track & Field Championship meeting, including Veteran events, will be at Crystal Palace on Sat/Sun 13th/14th May.
Veteran events are- Sat: 2000mSC Men- Sun 5000m & 3000m Walk Men & Women.
Male entries- 3 Amanda Close, Chatham, ME5 9EQ: Female- 209 Wincheap, Canterbury, CT1 3TP. Entries Close 14th April.

LONDON MARATHON
The Club Appeal this year will be for The Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital. Our runners will also be individually supporting various causes.

COURIEROSITIES (5)
There's nothing like fit athletes for getting injured. I don't mean your common-or-garden Achilles tweak but something with a bit more flair. Like the story of the league hack who did the pole vault, knocked the stanchion over and landed head-first on its concrete base. Expected sympathy from his team manager who races up with "Get over to the Shot, we need the point". He did, and dropped it on his toe.
I expect you've got your own idea of treatment. Some go to the Physio but most of us would rather be pummelled down Millwall for nothing. Have you met people running the wrong way round the track. That's after years of trackwork where their right legs have grown longer than their lefts. Misunderstandings can easily occur. One old Heathen had heard about RICE but thought you had to slap it all over you. That wouldn't have mattered only his was still in the tin. Of course injuries can be out-of-sight, like high BP. That's sometimes found in overweight people who were very skinny babies. Suggestions on a postcard.
