The outstanding cross-country result to report is Spencer Newport's win in the Southern Senior Championship at Parliament Hill, the bronze going to Dave Taylor for good measure.

There was a win in a low scoring Mobmatch against Ranelagh with Mark Steinle taking the Thompson Medal and Alan Davis the Harry Sheer Cup but we were again outgunned at Coulsdon by SLH. Tim Soutar, returning to the fold, showed the way round snowy Tunbridge Wells to win the Roger Smith Tankard in the Kent Vets, while in the Club 10, on a much kinder day at Hayes, Pete Barlow added the Rowland Cup to the Ponsford Pewter he had gained as our first vet home against SLH.

Some notable results also by the YAs and in the indoor arenas.

We now approach the conclusion to the Winter Season with the National Championships or Closing 5 according to one's perspective. Our thanks to trail-layers, marshals & officials.

NEWS of MEMBERS
As reported in the local press, Simon Lloyd has had a serious road accident while out running. We are glad to say that he is on the mend and has been moved out from intensive care.

Geoff Crowder has made a good recovery from his recent operation and has been able to visit the Club.

Alan Brent is slowly recovering from pleurisy following 'flu. We wish them all well.

"OFF-THE-PEG" ART
On Saturday 15th March from 7.30 until 10.00 original art by Mick Hamlin will be on Sale at the Clubhouse. The word is that original art is making a comeback (has it been away?)

Mick will be showing his paintings and drawings to a background of Bar noises and Modern Jazz music.

Mick first exhibited his work in the 1958 exhibition of Children's art held at London's Cooling Gallery in Bond Street. He was then included in the Young Contemporaries Exhibition in London in 1962 before taking a break from art. He resurfaced in 1969 at the Montreal Art Expo and was included amidst the words and images pavilion. Another break followed and he began to paint for public consumption again in 1990.

If you value the plural and the curious in preference to the singular and the uniform there is probably something for you in Mick Hamlin's work. An exhibition is planned for the Trinity Gallery, Tunbridge Wells later this year.

So come along to B.H.H.Q on 15th March and see for yourselves.

HEATHEN HAUNTS (22) Battersea Park by John (E) Turner
(Illustrated by Dave Johnson)

My wife and I, or should I say 'Er Indoors, are both from Battersea. I lived within one road of the Balham border but Maz was firmly up the junction (are you alluding to Clapham?) and beyond. My copy of Baedeker's "London and its Environs" dated 1930 states that the park was laid out between 1850 and 1858 on the site of Battersea Fields where the Duke of Wellington fought a duel with the Earl of Winchelsea in 1829. Battersea (from Patricsey or Peter's Island) was originally marshland flooded by the Thames, progressively drained for farming. Two hundred acres in area, the park was designed and built by John Gibson. A recent brochure informs us that there are over 3000 trees, some of which are original to the park opening. You could spend a long day getting to see everything on offer. What has it got? Well, because of space restrictions you will mainly get a list: 1000 parking places, bandstand, pump house, trim trail, bowling green, cafe, herb garden, Peace Pagoda- 38 feet high- a gift in 1985 to the people of London from the Japanese Buddhist order "Nipponzan Myohoji", deer enclosure including wallabies, peacocks, cranes and guinea fowl, lake for fishing & boating, site for boules/petanque matches, adventure playground, children's zoo, old English garden, sculptures by Henry Moore & Barbara Hepworth, main events site and the riverside walk which stretches mile between the Albert and Chelsea bridges. The park was also one of the main centres for the Festival of Britain in 1951 (the centenary of the Great Exhibition / Crystal Palace). How many of you remember the Funfair and Guinness Clock? All very interesting I hear you yawning, but what the Charlie Dickens has this to do with Athletics. Actually this long preamble is just to show that us runners don't have one-track minds Ha-Ha, Ho-Ho).

Battersea Park must be one of the most popular race venues in the country. Sri Chinmoy A.C stage their London races in the park (just turn up). These are from one mile to the Marathon normally between April and December on a Saturday morning, bright and early, or on Monday evenings, except for the Marathon which is on a Sunday morning in September. All the distances are run on a flat loop, either one mile or 2Km. The organisation and atmosphere are brilliant. You also have to be 50+ to count as a Vet in their eyes.

Vets A.C hold their running and walking races in the park and quite a few other races take place throughout the year - mostly 5 Mile or 10Km and often for charity. These are raced on the paths inside the park but I've heard that some people enjoy running on the track, (overlooked by the old power station that nobody seems to know what to do with). As well as Southern League and Vets A.C fixtures this is a training HQ for various clubs, including Belgrave who have recently mounted a œ1M bid to the Lottery (isn't it always) to upgrade the track to 8 lanes, have a two-tier stand &c.

If you've never been to the park, do give it a try. It has so many things going on, you won't be disappointed.
