Mon 6th May TED PEPPER MEMORIAL 10Km ROAD RACE (incl SCVAC Champ)
A report by Alastair Aitken, well-known as a contributor to athletic magazines and a participant in our race for the last two years.

Ilford's Amin Koikai, 22, who comes from Eldoret in the Rift Valley of Kenya, was the winner of Blackheath's successful promotion at Langley Park. Koikai, who has run 28.09 / 2:19 for 10K/Marathon, and whose ultimate aim is to represent Kenya in the next Commonwealth Games, found the race to his liking after a poor 2:46 in the London on only five weeks training after injury.
In the Ted Pepper, in traditional bright sunshine, Koikai started to move well clear after 2 miles and Blackheath's Roy Smith battled out the final stages with second placed Dave Castle, just ahead of last year's Brugge international Vets' Champion Andy Catton. Despite hamstring trouble 'popular' Cambridge Harrier Keith Penny was first M45 and reliable Mike Cronin was first M50 and 21st of the 162 finishers.
It was interesting to see 69 year old Steve Charlton go round in 39.42. He had had injury problems but was back on 5 miles a day. He should certainly test the 'Over 70' world 5K best of 18.43 at the Reading Open Vets in October.

GETTING TIGHT
Our Sports Medicine Correspondent, Johnnie Walker, reports two recent scientific studies. The first uses a "tremorometer" to measure your hand tremble and shows that a drop of alcohol actually cuts down your tremble (maybe because you're gripping the bar as hard as you can to save falling on the floor).

The other report was that sportsmen who wear tight neoprene shorts may risk blood clots because of restricted circulation. Of course the Americans have a name for it - "tight pants syndrome".

If you don't know Johnnie Walker, he's the one usually holding the railings at the "Harriers Rest" and wearing very loose-fitting shorts.

IT'S IN THE BAG
Our Vets' successes have been attributed to Rita White's bread pudding, consumed before or after the race (or preferably both). But another theory is that it's the special tea sold at Vets' gatherings. Those of you who read the last Courier may follow the rest of the story, which is that Mr.Horniman's tea company eventually passed to Tetley's. At the Southern Vets' cross-country we found evidence that it may have fallen into the hands of a well-known Heathen tycoon who's got shares in this, that and the other. In fact, every time you make a phone call you're probably helping him re-finance the Channel Tunnel.

Did you know that the Irish drink more tea than anyone else - 321 pots of tea each per year. Of course Cronin drinks his out of a Guinness bottle just to make you think that's how to win the Bennett or Wolf Cups. Then, when he's got some innocent, like Jim, full up with Guinness he puts in his famous kick.

Tetley's have just come out with a non-drip teabag so you can brew-up at the drinks station without getting drips all down your knees. For some reason they're trying it out in Australia so the drips are probably going upwards.

Brooke Bonds have countered with a tetrahedral (that's pyramid to you) teabag for extra perfusion which has been tested by the Thermofluid boffins at Imperial College. Before long you'll need a PhD before your missus'll let you bring her her tea in bed.
